RSD Bike Build Challenge

Tantangan RSD For OTO PLUS Readers is a bike building competition held by OTO PLUS Tabloid in co-operation with us and supported by official Kustomfest. The idea came about from reviews we were doing for RSD Kustom Corner, which is a special column in OTO PLUS-Indonesia. Once a month, our good friend Indramawan would send us bike pictures and the story of it to us. When we came across a bike called the Pussy Cub, we had an idea. What if we sent OTO PLUS Readers a sketch of an RSD Super Cub and see if they would build a bike based from this sketch design.

The competition was started in May 2013. Some of the OTO PLUS readers commented that it was no-easy competition building a bike which had a boardtracker  frame with a little touch of MotoGP style. Using a small-cc cub-engine was no easy task either. Moreover, we only gave a one-sided sketch so imagination and creativity was needed.

The competition not only attracted their readers' attention but also that of Kustomfest. Mr. Lulut 'LT' Wahyudi, the director of Kustomfest together with Mr. Aan Fikriyan gave us an invite to Kustomfest so we could choose the winner directly! The competition was held on October 5-6 2013 in Jogia Expo Center, Jogia, Central Java, Indonesia. From 11 participants, OTO PLUS committee finally selected only 3 finalists that would make it to the Grand Final (Unfortunately the last finalist, Fitra could not get his build to Kustomfest). So, only 2 finalists stepped to the Grand Final, Wiwin and Yayank.

WiWins "Garunda Langit"-This bike was really true to the spirit of the rendering and had may really nice details. The seat and paint job were world class. The twin shocks and tube steel trellis frame were very well done. My original sketch was inspired by the V5 and WiWin really drew on the details of our V5 to make his creation extra ordinary. This bike also sounded really good. The Brass RSD badge on the rear wheel was a great detail that he pulled from the rendering. -Roland

Yayanks "The Answer"-Yayank took their own direction and created an all-aluminum boxed flat frame. He also incorporated some well-placed RSD parts which were unexpected. He actually stole parts from his personal Sportster for this project creating a one into 2 into one exhaust using our Slant system. Really nice. He also hand built his own wheels welding together cut pieces into a custom set of fabricated aluminum rollers. The was a significant amount of work and thought that went into the concept and I was really blown away by it myself. -Roland

And finally the winner is...Both! That's right. We pick both. There are a lot of bikes built with mega budget but the problem is, the bikes are not built with passion. It’s very different with these two bikes. They are built with passion and what amazes us is, they do it with high craftsmanship. No CNC machine, but handmade!!! That is why, Rolands decision was, they are both winners. He didn’t want to kill their passion. Speaking of which...check out a few of the other entries below!

We would like to thank everyone who participated. We had no idea what to expect from this and we were truly blown away with the outcome. We were really amazed these guys took on this challenge. Anybody who touches a bike knows it’s no small feat to build a machine, never mind a ground up custom build. We have a massive amount of respect for what these guys are doing on the other side of the planet. As much as we inspired them, they inspired us. Both winners received a Bell RSD Carbon Fiber helmet and their pick of RSD leather jackets.
