KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special

This custom gray ops version of our RSD Black Ops wheels will match nicely to our steel gray powdercoated frame from Olympic Powder Coating. Whatchyou think?

KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special
Many a tale has been told about the peg-legged pirate. There’s something just so mystical about these single-appendage legends. After much research, we’ve determined that these stories have been passed down through the ages for one simple reason; one-leg just looks so much more intimidating than two. I’m not saying we should all start chopping off one of our good legs but… a custom single-sided swingarm on a motorcycle kind of does the same thing.
KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special
We thought this V-Rod deserved a little character so we bent up some 4130 chromoly tubing and fired up the TIG welder and made her a custom peg-leg of her own. We found a Ducati Hypermotard shock linkage that we wanted to utilize so we fabricated an upper mount to house it. The custom built Ohlins TTX shock came to us sprung and valved for our 500-ish lb. machine, direct from Ohlins USA with help from their road race technician Eric Knight.
KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special
As you can also see, K&N was able to help us find an air filter to fit just right.

KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special
We got our turbo in from Trask and hand fab'd a custom exhaust for it using components from Burn's Stainless. This turbo, in conjunction with Zippers Thundermax self tuner, should make 160+ HP. Now we just have to find the right K&N filter to clear the bodywork.

KH-9 Vrod Nightrod Special

The last Vrod we did was circa 2005, so it’s been a while since we’ve attacked Harley’s Porsche designed stepchild. Our Vrod will be a little different than most. Single sided swingarm, 1098 suspension linkage with TTX shock and Ohlins FGR Radial Mount Busa Forks with custom RSD designed triple clamps and stem Clip ons. Hand built bodywork all the way around. Custom fuel cell, Rear sets with custom mounts and linkage. Trask Turbo with custom Stainless exit. RSD wheels and brakes and tons of other shit we haven’t thought up yet. In short, Vrod madness.

only thing i would change is please do the bike monochrome black....or at the very least powdercoat the front forx black and the ohlins black too.....ya gold is their " thing" but if your gonna do a Night bike it should be a Black Night bike like Batman would drive. just my opinion. :) Love your stuff lots

The only "offensive" thing I see is the lower cowl- it looks a bit blocky (i.e. slow). Rear-end and seat are perfect. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hi! Picture is looking good. I would like see a version where you use the belly pan (if thats the name of the thing under the engine ) as an exhuast, perhaps tuneable for sound level. Best regards, Tobias

Looks sweet, get onto it lads! Maybe try a heat exchanger rather than an inter-cooler, they are more efficient and easy to hide.

Love the fact that someone is still giving the VRod some love. The rear swingarm, wheels, custom body work and front fork setup really make this bike. Hopefully you will bring this bike to the V-Twin Expo next year. The only thing I dont care for is that turbo hanging off the side. Why don't you have or you build a BIG Bore naturally aspirated motor for this bike with a custom exhaust? Anyone can hang a turbo off the side of a VRod! Just my 2 cents keep up the work love it!

Looks like a sic bike! That turbo should make it scooter around just fine. Busa forks this time instead of gsxr 1000 forks? Any reason to that?

We couldnt get the length we needed from GSX-R forks. The Ohlins Busa legs had what we needed.

Some things interest me and some don't. I have a Street Rod I have been working on and more rigid triple clamps for the male slider fork, particularly the lower clamp, would give better steering feel. Anything that lightens the bike is interesting to me. A tire wider than a 180 at the rear does not, it slows the steering too much, as does even more wheelbase than stock. I'v never been a big fan of over styled wheels, or wheels that weigh more than necessary to do the job. Anything that lowers the bike more than it is loses my interest as cornering ability is almost the most important quality a bike must have for me to like it. A single front rotor on such heavy and fast bike is simply unsafe. A hard run down Glendora Mountain Road will fade it into oblivion. I am curious what the 1098 suspension linkage does to fuel capacity. Perhaps the belly pan holds some fuel? If that rear suspension buys you some height adjustability that would be a plus. 17 inch wheels at each end are a must.

Where will the gas tank be located? In the drawing it is not shown under the seat?

We are fabricating and under-belly tank for it. Will be underneath the swingarm bewteen the motor and rear tire.

I can't help bu think you've been looking at the work Shaw H-D has been doing in the UK. The silhouette of your V-Rod is remarkably similar to Shaw's Nascafe Racer. All good.

Roland...That is sweet...I imagine that same bike with a set of XR styed Supertrapps...with a "DE Rak'ed" front end..a little more rear ride height...say a 55ish wheelbase....want to do a V-rod custom myself...but use a C&J single shock frame and custom metal...not the typical XR glass....Loved your Ducati street-tracker 2. My best...Jay2

Thanks for the comment. The guy we're building this bike for is into drag racing a likes to go really fast in a straight line. Hence the low, raked stance.

Hey, Mr. Rolland Sands, I have a question, and I know it has nothing to do with this post but, I was wondering if you had any ideas for mounting a cafe racer seat to a beach cruiser bicycle frame? I'm building a rat-rod cafe racer motorcycle from scrap parts in my garage.
